RN Hosts Radio Program on Healthcare Education, Disease Prevention
Advance for Nurses

Barbara Ficarra, MPA, BSN, RN, began hosting the radio program Health in 30 April 28 on WRCR Radio Rockland AM 1300, Rockland County, NY.

The 30-minute program will air Fridays at 5:30 p.m. EST, but can be heard via streaming audio anywhere with Internet access, at www.wrcr.com.

“Communication is vital for better healthcare,” said Ficarra.

“Many people don’t ask questions when they visit their healthcare professional. They might feel intimidated to do so or simply they don’t know how and what questions to ask. That is why this radio show, Health in 30, is so important, because it will provide health information for listeners about prevention and encourage listeners to be proactive.”

Information about the latest medical research and product/safety recalls will be provided on the show, which is primarily focused on education and prevention.

The first show educated viewers about allergies and asthma and featured an interview with Charles Feldman, MD, from Columbia University’s Department of Pediatrics.

Some other interviewees already scheduled include Sandy Summers, president of the Center for Nursing Advocacy, and Pat Smith, president of the Lyme Disease Association.

Some topics for future shows include information on diabetes; heart disease; sports injuries; staying safe in the sun; dealing with a trip to the ED; taking charge of your healthcare, which includes information on helping prevent medical mistakes; organizing your health history; and how to be a patient advocate.
