Carl R. Sullivan, MD

Carl R. Sullivan, MD, FACP, (Rolly) is professor and vice-chair of the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at West Virginia University School of Medicine. Dr. Sullivan serves as the Medical Director of Substance Abuse Programs for West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. He is board certified in psychiatry, internal medicine and addiction psychiatry, and Dr. Sullivan is a fellow in the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Sullivan’s practice of 22 years includes teaching, clinical work and research in several areas of addiction medicine. Dr. Carl Sullivan directs the largest office-based opioid treatment clinic in West Virginia. He has participated in more than two-dozen smoking cessation clinical trials.

Dr. Sullivan has served as Director of the West Virginia Addiction Training Institute for 18 years. He co-facilitated the National Advisory Group for the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment/SAMSHA in charge of revising TIP 19, “Detoxification and Substance Abuse Treatment.” Dr. Sullivan is a member of the Coalition on Appalachia Substance Abuse Policy and Kentucky Advisory Committee on Opioid Dependence and Pregnancy.

Dr. Sullivan has presented numerous workshops and plenary sessions throughout the United States and has consulted with treatment programs internationally, nationally and statewide on the subject of substance abuse. He testified before the House of Representatives Appropriations Sub-Committee on prescription opioid abuse.
