By Barbara Ficarra, RN, BSN, MPA
I am delighted to participate in the HIMSS Southern California Annual Health Care Conference. I will be moderating a panel titled: “Social Media in Healthcare: Promoting Patient Empowerment and Engagement, Healthcare Value, and Patient Centered Care.” Panelists include: Joseph Kim, MD, MPH, Christina Thielst, MHA, FACHE, FHIMSS, and Wandia Chiuri.
Healthcare is becoming increasingly oriented to consumers. Patients and their families are true partners with the other key stakeholders in healthcare delivery. They are proactively engaged, healthcare delivery is patient-centered and coordinated, and health information is readily and freely available to both healthcare consumers and healthcare providers. Informed decision-making both by patients and healthcare providers is a fundamental characteristic of a consumer oriented healthcare system. Our speakers will explore how current and emerging health information technology applications will realize the goal of making healthcare more patient-centered, encourage patient engagement, and make all the key healthcare stakeholders accountable and informed decision makers.
